New York Woman Extradited in Bold Lottery Scam Targeting 85-Year-Old Florida Victim

A months-long investigation into a ruthless lottery scam has ended with the extradition of Shania Baptiste from New York to Florida, where she faces charges for allegedly defrauding an 85-year-old woman out of her life savings.

Baptiste, handcuffed and escorted by deputies, was personally greeted by Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood upon arrival. Chitwood, known for his tough stance on elder abuse, didn’t mince words, publicly condemning Baptiste’s actions as predatory and despicable.

According to authorities, Baptiste and her alleged accomplice, Nelson Brooks, executed a calculated scheme that preyed on the trust of a vulnerable Daytona Beach senior. The suspects convinced the elderly woman she had won a $1 million sweepstakes, but insisted she first pay taxes and fees in order to claim the prize. Over time, the victim handed over her life savings, believing the windfall was just around the corner.

“This wasn’t just a scam—it was a full-blown manipulation of someone who deserved to live her later years in peace,” Sheriff Chitwood stated.

Investigators tracked financial transactions and communication between the suspects and the victim, eventually uncovering the interstate fraud operation. Brooks remains under investigation, while Baptiste now faces multiple felony charges, including fraud, grand theft, and exploitation of the elderly.

Authorities are urging others to remain cautious and report any suspicious prize or lottery claims, especially those targeting seniors.
