A community is mourning after a devastating accident claimed the lives of a father and his infant son on the night of Friday, May 16. Mitchell Patch, 34, an elementary school math teacher, and his 1-year-old son, Everett, were fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing Baymeadows Road in Jacksonville around 8:30 p.m.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the pair were attempting to cross the street when a Honda Civic traveling eastbound hit them. Emergency responders arrived quickly but were unable to save either Mitchell or Everett. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a local hospital and is cooperating with law enforcement. Officer Max Morel confirmed the victims’ names and stated that the investigation is ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time.
Mitchell Patch was known not only as a dedicated educator but as a loving husband and father. His death has sent shockwaves through the school where he taught and the wider Jacksonville community. “Mitchell’s impact on our students and staff was immeasurable,” said the school principal. “He brought math to life with enthusiasm and patience. His absence leaves a void we cannot fill.”

Friends, colleagues, and neighbors describe Patch as a kind, devoted family man who always put his students and his son first. “He would light up whenever he talked about Everett,” a colleague shared. “Being a father was his greatest joy.”
In the wake of the tragedy, Patch’s wife is left to cope with the unimaginable loss of her husband and young son. Her employer launched a GoFundMe campaign to support her during this time, writing: “Their family was full of light, and now that light has been dimmed. We are heartbroken.”
Residents have begun to create a memorial at the crash site, leaving flowers, candles, and stuffed animals in honor of Mitchell and Everett. Plans are underway for a candlelight vigil to be held later this week.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging caution for both drivers and pedestrians, especially in high-traffic areas. Baymeadows Road, a busy stretch of roadway, has long been a concern for locals who say additional safety measures are needed.
This tragedy has ignited renewed calls for improved crosswalks, better street lighting, and lower speed limits in pedestrian-heavy zones.
In a community reeling from loss, one message is clear: Mitchell Patch and Everett will not be forgotten.
