Online Reactions Break Out
The cropped photo went viral very fast. People on social media wondered if Harris had purposefully left out the Trumps.
One user joked, “Best photo crop of the decade.” Another said, “This picture made me laugh right away. I adore well-cropped photos.
Harris Remains Quiet About the Trumps
Harris commended Carter’s legacy in her caption:
“Jimmy Carter cherished our nation.” He served others, lived out his faith, and left the world in a better state than when he arrived. The numerous contributions made by President Carter will be remembered for many years to come.
She made no mention of Trump. Given that she was Biden’s running mate in the 2024 election, where she directly faced Trump, this omission only served to fuel speculation.
The Carter Center Boosts the Debate
The Carter Center posted its own collection of funeral photos on X (formerly Twitter) to stoke the flames. Despite their confirmed attendance, Donald and Melania Trump were not included in these pictures either.
An Effort to Bring People Together
All five current former U.S. presidents—Biden, Trump, Clinton, Bush, and Obama—as well as a number of vice presidents, including Mike Pence and JD Vance, were present at the service. Additionally present were first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff. But Michelle Obama wasn’t there. There was no explanation from her office.
The tribute is overshadowed by politics.
Even though the purpose of the event was to pay tribute to Jimmy Carter’s legacy, political drama has taken center stage in online discussions. Once more, a time of solidarity became a public perception battlefield.
