KURIL ISLANDS, RUSSIA / HOKKAIDO, JAPAN — Coastal regions in eastern Russia and northern Japan have been struck by a tsunami following a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that occurred early Wednesday off the coast of Russia.
The epicenter of the quake was located near the Kuril Islands, a seismically active area between Japan and Russia. Tremors were felt across the region, and within minutes, tsunami waves began reaching nearby coastlines.
Residents in Russia’s Kuril Islands and Japan’s Hokkaido were urged to evacuate immediately to higher ground. Japanese authorities issued emergency alerts, and sirens were activated in coastal towns as water levels began to rise.
Early footage shows flooded streets, damaged infrastructure, and panicked residents fleeing inland. The full extent of the damage is still unknown, but emergency response teams have been deployed across both countries.
Aftershocks are continuing to shake the region, and tsunami warnings remain in effect for surrounding Pacific areas, including possible alerts for Hawaii and parts of Alaska depending on wave propagation.
Officials urge the public to:
- Stay away from coastal areas.
- Follow local evacuation orders.
- Monitor official channels for real-time updates.
This is a developing story. More details to come.
